Formed in 2019, Ashes of Autumn quickly established themselves as a formidable presence within the Australian rock landscape, earning festival appearances and high-profile support slots while carving out a sound defined by emotional depth, melodic strength, and hard-rock grit. Through natural evolution and creative growth, the band has continued to refine both their identity and their purpose, not just as musicians, but as storytellers.
A pivotal chapter began when drummer and producer Stefan Helbo joined the band in 2023, forming a powerful creative partnership with vocalist and songwriter Melanie Flynn. Together, they became the beating heart of Ashes of Autumn, laying the foundation for a body of work driven by emotional honesty, sonic ambition, and a shared commitment to authenticity.
This partnership gave rise to The Darker Side of Now, a project conceived not simply as an album, but as a deeply intentional and immersive experience. What began as an internal creative collaboration soon expanded into a globally connected production, drawing on world-class talent to bring the vision to life.
Rather than releasing the project as a single moment in time, Ashes of Autumn have chosen to unveil The Darker Side of Now as an unfolding journey. Each song is released as its own chapter, accompanied by a cinematic music video and documentary-style visual content that offers audiences an intimate look behind the scenes. These visuals are raw, reflective and deep, capturing the emotional reality behind the music rather than presenting a polished façade.
The sonic depth of The Darker Side of Now was shaped by a carefully curated team of international collaborators. Renowned Swedish guitarist and producer Tommy Denander (Alice Cooper, Hollywood Vampires, Toto) contributed as a session musician, recording all guitar parts across the album while also layering subtle synth and keyboard textures that expanded the emotional and cinematic range of the songs. Mixing was handled in Chicago by Matt Dougherty (Disturbed, Sevendust, Staind), whose approach balanced raw intensity with clarity and space, while mastering was completed in Los Angeles by Elliot James Mulhern (Matchbox Twenty, Hey Monday, Fall Out Boy), elevating each track to its full dynamic and emotional potential.
Melanie’s presence throughout this project is marked by striking vulnerability. Across the visual storytelling, she reveals a gentler, unguarded side of herself, allowing moments of fragility, honesty, and emotional truth to take centre stage. This openness is not performative; it is an invitation. An invitation to sit with discomfort, to acknowledge pain, and to recognise the quiet strength that emerges through survival.
The Darker Side of Now carries a clear and resonant message: that through adversity, trauma, loss, and mental health challenges, there exists a depth of strength that cannot be measured. This project does not shy away from darkness, it honours it, explores it, and ultimately reframes it as a source of connection, growth, and hope.
Ashes of Autumn are not simply releasing music, they are building a world. One that invites listeners to feel seen, understood, and less alone. One song, one story, one shared experience at a time.
Central to this experience is the band’s custom-built, private and unreleased to the internet space, listening Portal, that has been designed to deepen connection. Through this Portal, listeners gain access to exclusive content, extended narratives, and personal
insights into the meaning behind each song. It transforms listening into participation, inviting fans to explore themes of trauma, grief, mental health, resilience, and self-discovery in a way that feels personal, reflective, and profoundly relatable.
The band is shaping up to take on international stages in 2026 , both as ambassadors for mental health and as a rockband that are not afraid to show up and impress crowd with an intensely energetic live show that continue to blur genre boundaries, seamlessly blending melodic rock sensibilities with heavier elements, cinematic video backdrop and a powerhouse front woman. The result is a visual and sonic experience that is, unmistakably Ashes of Autumn, refined, confident, and simply unforgettable!
