Midland Railway play a form of nerdy punk-rock mixed with indie-pop, influenced by the likes of Weezer, Bright Eyes, and The Smiths. They are Nick Lote (vocals and guitar), Kat Donohue (bass and backing vocals), Travis Atkinson (drums), and Olivia Dee (guitar). The Manchester band create music that is energetic, catchy, and emotive, with particularly strong melodies. As a lyricist, Nick has an ability to tell stories within songs, often with dark humour, and some exceptionally specific references to his hobbies, interests, and experiences.
Some of the more cheerful songs tackle topics such as Pokémon, online football management, and serial killers. In 2025, Midland Railway signed their first record deal and released their long-awaited, self-titled debut album. Its lead single,'She Loves Ted Bundy', was a huge hit with independent radio stations around the world. Despite it being about a girl who wishes she were dating a notorious Volkswagen obsessive, serial killer and necrophiliac, it received over 700 radio plays. The album was extremely well-received, with the range of moods and themes captured within the album a feature noted in many reviews.'The Pokémon Adventure' has become something of a geek-rock anthem, and'A Song for Hannah-Beth' has become a firm fan-favourite.
